The NFB sounds like a Labor Union for the Blind

I don't know about you, but to me that whole National Federation of the Blind sounds like a labor union for blind people.

Post 2 by smelly (Generic Zoner) on Thursday, 15-Sep-2011 23:18:45

why do you feel that way?

Post 3 by SavannahPhilHarmonicMusician (Veteran Zoner) on Thursday, 15-Sep-2011 23:27:58

Because its called a Federation and they stand up for rights that some people don't want. My union hasn't stood up for anything I didn't believe in yet.

So the conservative party sounds a bit like a union for the Christians then, and the rich, don't you think, by your definition?

In a very very general sense, I can see where your coming from. A union stands up for the rights of one group of people, as does the NFB, in a political sense at least. They are similar in that regard I suppose, but I would not really make the correlation.
I have to ask though, are you saying that its a bad thing that they are similar to labor unions, or that its a good thing?

No, just a little weird because they feel they represent all blind, whereas my union only represents only those of us who are members.

Though my union trys to protect all rights of musicians, I don't think they feel they represent us all.

No doubt they'd like to, the more union members the more money they get and the. When you hear about leaders of unions making 4 and 500000 a year... well ya! who wouldn't want in on that scam!

You know, I think all causes and ideas are hi-jacked.
We see places without unions, where 1000 people are laid off and the CEO salary increased by millions of dollars (IBM and HP are recent examples, granted IBM has a union, but it's a joke and does not do anything, basically paid off by management).
Then we've seen unions that insist on ridiculous contracts and rights, and make te industry too expensive to maintain, MBA and steel workers are example (there is one steel works in the U.S. that is not unionized, and it remains very competative, the others are all shutting down because they're undercut from abroad).
So do we need to protect workers rights. Yes, I'm sorry, but we do. I think when corporations act like IBM and HP, the workers should all walk out and completely paralyze the corporation until they see sense, for the most part their CEOs do nothing, and they'renever being really paid for performance anyway.
Similarly unions that are so obsessed with excessive rights, and themselves, can destroy the whole work place or industry.
It's like everything else, from communism to banking. The people who are in key roles end up corrupt and greedy, and destroy the whole setup by lying, cheating, and stealing.

I have to agree with the poster before me. Withoug unions the companies would simply set policy no matter how poor the people that actually produce the wealth had to be.
If a CEO can get paid the amounts they do that money, medical, and all should benefit the people that make that company possible.
No the NFB doesn't cover all blind people, but the work they do benefits all blind people. They've even got the money. Smile. I say yeah for organizations such as them.

The NFB could more be compared to the NAACP or AARP not to a labor union. A labor union is for workers at a certain company, or more often of a particular industry or trade.

Post 12 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Saturday, 17-Sep-2011 2:27:25

True, and the NFB will fight for the general rights of blind people, not just for their members who pay dues. A labor union generally will only nigotiate on behalf of its members who pay dues, not for those who do not. That´s the big difference between an interest group/organization and a union really, one of the major differences anyway.

But the NFB isn't saying it a union the poster of this board is.

To be fare the NFB does not represent all of the blind. You have the acb and other such groups.

I say nay to them and stay as far away as possible! I mean, you are right in that reguard. Most unions and the nfb grab jobs in a thuglike manner and give them to people who are incapable and doesn’t deserve a position. Both force themselves on companies, and also sue or give successful good hearted men problems. They both abuse people and give them trouble unless you like them. They also happen to disrupt reality and try to force there ways on people when it doesn’t work. There’s not uch in common with people except for disability and job. They often make too much noise, become rowdy and rude, pushy and unfriendly. In fact all blind organizations are like that and a lot of the government that is forced on to people are like that which s really rather unfortunate

I see your points however the n f b isn't always like that. Oh, they can be and I can't stand that part, but that isn't what they are all about.

Post 17 by SavannahPhilHarmonicMusician (Veteran Zoner) on Saturday, 29-Oct-2011 17:03:35

All unions aren't like that either. I am lucky to be in a good union that is a family.

Post 18 by CrazyMusician (If I don't post to your topic, it's cuz I don't give a rip about it!) on Monday, 19-Dec-2011 23:30:26

I went to a union dinner for my husband's company a few months ago, and it was the biggest liberal propaganda event I have ever been to in my life!
We thought it would be a celebration of 100 years of the union, and it wound up being an RIP-Jack-Layton, anti-Conservative, biased bunch of mouthpieces who loved to hear themselves talk...
They closed the bar during speeches; I now know why... LOL

Good for them. This topic is not political but I repeat, good for them
